Dale Chihuly e seus jardins de vidro/ Dale Chihuly and his glass gardens

Às vezes, não há semente para plantar, mas, sim, vidro, em vez disso. O artista plástico norte-americano Dale Chihuly (1941) especializou-se em “plantar jardins de vidro”. Há poucos meses, uma equipe da Altherswanke visitou a exposição permanente chamada “Chihuly Garden and Glass”, próxima ao icônico Space Needle, em Seattle (EUA)./ Few months ago, a team of Altherswanke visited the permanent exhibition called “Chihuly Garden and Glass”, next to Seattle’s iconic Space Needle.

Na área interna da exposição, arbustos, árvores, plantas e flores de vidro atraem a atenção dos visitantes. Foi incrível ver uma “bromélia” feita em vidro e identificá-la como planta. Sinal do quão benfeito é o trabalho./In the inner area of ​​the exhibition, glass shrubs, trees, plants, and flowers draw visitors’ attention. It was amazing to see a “bromeliad” made of glass and identify it as a plant.

Nos jardins externos, vegetais verdadeiros encontram-se, lado a lado, com “vegetais de vidro”, em pura harmonia. As plantas crescem, florescem e seguem seus ciclos naturais, e Chihuly sabe como lidar com isso e como se beneficiar desse processo natural em suas exposições./Plants grow, bloom, and follow their natural cycles, and Chihuly knows how to deal with it, and how to benefit from this natural process in his exhibitions.

 

Percorrendo a exposição, aprendemos que o trabalho de Chihuly é autobiográfico. O artista busca inspiração, principalmente, nas formas abstratas das flores e plantas do jardim de sua mãe, em Tacoma (EUA), que tanto o fascinavam na infância. Ele ama cores vibrantes e intensas, porque, para ele, “o mundo tem que ser muito colorido e orgânico”. / Through the exhibition, we learn that Chihuly‘s work is autobiographical. The artist mostly seeks inspiration in the abstract forms of the flowers and plants of his mother’s garden in Tacoma (USA), which fascinated him so much in his childhood. He loves vibrant and intense colors because, to him, “the world has to be very colorful and organic”.

As “plantas”, “flores” e “árvores” de cada jardim que ele cria são todas peças de vidro soprado. Chihuly tem boas lembranças de saídas familiares para a praia, procurando por objetos de vidro. Mais tarde, ele se encontrou com o vidro de novo quando estudava design de interiores na University of Washington. Depois da formatura, em 1965, fez cursos na University of Wisconsin e na Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), onde aprendeu mais sobre a matéria-prima. A paixão pela técnica do vidro soprado, no entanto, começou em 1968, na fábrica de vidro Venini (Veneza, Itália). After graduating in 1965, he took courses at the University of Wisconsin and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he learned more about the raw material. His passion for the technique of blowing glass, however, began in 1968 at Venini glass factory (Venice, Italy). In 1971, he cofounded Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State.

Mas Chihuly não é um soprador de vidro comum. After his car accident in England in 1976, which cost him the sight in his left eye, he began questioning why glass objects needed to be symmetrical as they had been for the past 2,000 years, since their invention. Instead, using centrifugal force and the heat of the furnace, Chihuly began making forms that deliberately allowed glass to spin off-center. He invented a mode of working with the molten material that let it find its final shape in its own organic way.

As obras de Dale Chihuly fazem parte da coleção de mais de 200 museus, espalhados pelo mundo. His art is not only in museums, but also in many other public and private places. In 1999, the artist was invited by President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton to make an iconic work for the White House Millennium Celebration. He created two identical crystal trees (The Crystal Tree of Light – see below the image by Master Sgt. Jeff Walston/U.S. Air Force), which enchanted the party guests.

A propósito, a exposição “Chihuly Glass and Garden” também mostra aos visitantes outras séries famosas, tais como “Cylinders and Baskets”, “Seaforms” (conchas e cavalos-marinhos parecem ser tirados do mar), “Persians” (olhando para cima, para apreciar o “Teto Persa”, faz o pescoço doer, mas vale a pena), “Ikebana and Float Boats” e “Chandeliers” (belos candelabros !!!), além de seus jardins de vidro, claro./ By the way, “Chihuly Glass and Garden” exhibition also shows visitors other famous series, such as “Cylinders and Baskets”, “Seaforms” (shells and seahorses seem to be taken from the sea), “Persians” (looking up to enjoy the “Persian Ceiling” makes our necks ache, but it is worthwhile), “Ikebana and Float Boats”, and “Chandeliers” (beautiful chandeliers!!!), besides his glass gardens, of course.
